It's a Sleep Miracle

I'm not superstitious, but I must admit I'm terrified of talking about our sleep training progress for fear I will jinx the amazing sleep miracle that is taking place at the Olson house.  Last night Asher did not wake up a single time once he fell asleep.  I fed him at 4:30 a.m., and he woke up at 6:45.  Zero. Zip. Nada waking ups in between.

Tonight Asher fell asleep after only 23 minutes (about half the time of last night).  Fingers crossed that the evening goes as well as last night, we will see!

Grandma & Grandpa Visit Albuquerque!

Karen and Jim were here this last weekend.  It was a lovely visit, especially since Asher has really started napping and sleeping better which means he is just delightful during the day.

Old blue eyes...

When Asher wears his white onesie and orange socks and sucks in his bottom lip, he looks like a duck.  Quack.

Pretty flowers...

We took the tram up to the top of Sandia Peak, which is an elevation of over 10,000 feet.  Despite my fear of heights, it was well worth it to see the unbelievable view.  From the top, you can see 9% of the entire state of New Mexico.   Pretty awesome.

It has begun....

41 minutes ago Ben and I began our sleep training adventure (nightmare?).  Earlier in the day we moved Asher's crib from our bedroom into his nursery, and spent a lot of time in his room throughout the day to bring home the point that it's a happy, safe place to be.

At 7:13 we put Asher into his crib, awake, for the first time in his little 5 month life. At 7:15 he started to cry. At 7:18 Ben said "I want to quit.  I hate hearing him cry."  We let him cry for three minutes, then checked on him, rubbed his back, kissed his head, and told him goodnight.  Then we waited 5 minutes before checking again, then ten minutes.  After the first three checks Ben looked at me and said "I would buckle if I were doing this alone.  We need to do this together."  Which was incredibly heartwarming, he is such a great dad.
.......

It looks like we are done with the first 'bedtime' of sleep training.  Asher cried for 47 minutes before settling himself down and falling asleep.  But we know this isn't it for the night.  We have been getting up 5-10 times a night to pop his pacifier back in when he wakes up, and tonight we will be letting him get himself back to sleep.  Of course this morning we were certain that the pacifier waking ups had to come to an end, and now it doesn't sound so bad to wake up every hour to sleepily shuffle to his crib.  It's amazing how listening to your baby cry immediately makes you rethink whether you reaaalllly need a good nights sleep ever again in your life.

That being said, we did make a unilateral [softy] parent decision to wait to sleep train Asher on naps.  Before tonight we thought knocking it all at once would be best, but he has been napping in his crib for all three naps  and while they aren't perfect, they get better every day.

5 Month Pictures

Asher is 5 months old!

Awesome series of typical Asher faces...

When Asher looked to his left and first saw the gator, this happened...

But he quickly decided he loves him :)

"Asher you're 5 months old!"
"BFD mom.  5 months ain't old enough to eat cake."

Someone loves sitting up

"Oh no!  You fell!"

"Mom, back off, I got this."

"See, totally got it."

"Oh but now we're tipping... mom, might need your help!"

"We've no longer got this, mom, definitely need your assistance here!"

"Really mom?  I tell you to back off once and this is your reaction?  Harsh."

"I want my toes.  In my mouth."

Stomping around

Cute baby with a pacifier.

"Don't do it Asher.  Leave the pacifier in your mouth."

That mom.  She's always telling me what to do.  What does she know anyway.  I do what I want!

I'll be really sneaky about it... just slooooowly take it out.  She won't notice.

See, what does she know.  Pacifier's gone.  Everything's fine.

My pacifier's gone!!!

"Look what I can do!"

"I grab my toes..."

"And then I start rocking..."

"And then I rock a little more..."

"...and then I land on my face."

I love this picture.  You might think those are Asher's hands... but one is a hand and one is a foot.

Hand & Foot.

"I don't wanna suck my thumb.  But I'll suck your thumb."

"Your thumb, my toes.... life is awesome."
