Goodbye Harlan

On September 15th we said goodbye to Harlan at our home. Our vet came out and we snuggled Har one last time on the deck in the sunshine.

Harlan was the greatest dog we will ever have, and probably the greatest dog that's ever lived. He cared about one thing and one thing only: our family. He brought us so much laughter and so much joy. It was devastating to say goodbye to him, and it was a kindness to let him leave us peacefully and with his dignity. Harlan developed dementia and was increasingly distressed and confused. We wanted to make sure that when we said goodbye, he knew it was us loving him up and holding him tight. We had 11 amazing years with Harlan and will forever be grateful for every last second.

Here are some memories from our last few hours with Har 💓

Ben's last time bringing Har up for bed, after carrying him up and down the stairs for 15+ months.

Ash slept with Harlan the last few nights, mostly to calm him down. His dementia had gotten really bad at night time.

Just laying on some toys.

The last walk about.

The boys were both home (but across the house) when we said goodbye to Harlan as Sully tested positive for COVID the night before. They were pretty worried seeing their mom and dad as sad as we were, and did some pretty cute things that night to try to cheer us up.
